Arsenal’s striker pursuit continues and the new name on the list is Athletico Madrid’s marksman Diego Costa. The striker has made a mince meat of Falcao’s exit to Monaco and he himself might just be on the move sooner rather than later.
He has been linked with a move to the Premier League with Liverpool and Chelsea previously linked with a swoop for him but it seems the Gunners have thrown their own hat into the ring. The Mirror (a UK tabloid) reported Chelsea’s interest but AS (a Spanish tabloid) is now reporting Arsenal’s own.
Arsenal have been linked with moves for plethora of strikers; Lewandowski, Llorente, Klose, Benzema, Suarez, Rooney and Martinez but the fact there remains that the kind of striker Arsenal need is a versatile one, a striker that can act as a dependable back-up to Giroud but not a direct threat. Suarez, Rooney and Costa are in this category as they can play as a lone forward in the absence of the Frenchman or play on the wings when he is available.
Another reason why Diego Costa would be a good piece of business is the price tag and the ease with which Arsenal can get him now that we are willing and ready to spend money. Reports have it that he carries a buy-out clause of just 35million Pounds and that is 15 million Pounds less than the minimum we might have to bid to tempt Liverpool into considering to sell Suarez to us. The fact that it is also his buy-out clause means we don’t have to go about crawling and begging Athletico Madrid to sell him to us as against how we will have to beg Liverpool to sell Suarez to us.
The only edge Suarez has is that should we get him in the winter window, he will not struggle settling down at Arsenal since he has already been integrated into the Premier League style and also, he will be available to play for Arsenal in the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League as against Costa that would need time to adapt and would also be limited to domestic campaign with us since he is already cup tied in the Champions League after representing Athletico Madrid.
It won’t be easy getting Costa with Chelsea’s interest in him. Chelsea’s strikers have been misfiring especially in the Premier League and reports have it that Mourinho is targeting a top notch striker in the winter window but that shouldn’t scare us. It is unlike before when we were scared of spending, now we can spend and if we could pip Manchester United and PSG to the signing of Ozil, then, we can beat Chelsea to Diego Costa’s signature.
